The Government of the Republic of Uganda has received a loan from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) towards the cost of the Development of a Specialized Maternal and Neonatal Health Care Unit Project in Mulago Hospital. The overall objective of The Development of a Specialized Maternal and Neonatal Health Care Unit Project in Mulago Hospital is to contribute to the attainment of the health related MDGs through the reduction of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality.
Specifically the project will improve Maternal and Neonatal Health Care Services delivery at Mulago Hospital, through improvement of infrastructure, supply of equipment/materials and training of personnel; and decongest the Hospital by focusing on provision of tertiary and specialized Maternal and Neonatal healthcare services in Obstetric/Gynecology Department.
Mulago Hospital was established in 1924, and currently is one of three national referral hospitals. It is located on Mulago hill, near several health-care related Colleges of the Makerere University. Mulago Hospital provides health care, education services and conducts research. The hospital has a theoretical bed capacity of about1,500 beds.
